Despite our attempts to ignore it, we are undoubtedly living in a dark age. Moral corruption is rampant, indifference is trendy, and everyone is stupid.

With cynicism lacing almost every aspect of our lives, it’s hard not to ask yourself what the point of all this is. And while it does seem like someone is outdoing themselves with the bullshit being pillaged our way, it still doesn’t mean we just lay down and take it.

When I think about the long list of atrocities we’ve lived in this short but long year, I can’t help but lament the deaths of Kobe Bryant and Chadwick Boseman. We loved Kobe and Chadwick because they were more than just focused; they were regal in their endeavors. Walking into something as if you are deserving is very different from any nervous audition/game. We experienced the spirits of 2 people so aware of their purpose, and so willing to fulfill it, that it readjusted everything we know about their respective fields. Imagine how in tune with your calling you have to be to force a widespread week of reflection in the event of your death.

...

With all these reminders of death, I implore you to do things that remind you you’re alive. Get that tattoo, jump off something really high, and fall in love with someone if you feel inclined. The only way to properly show respect to the millions of lives lost this year is to not waste yours.

If you’re anything like me (congratulations), then the entirety of 2020 was characterized by this feeling of approaching a point where anything satisfactory was unacceptable; whether that be aspirations, relationships, or menial daily tasks. This feeling was only intensified by a daily reminder that life is expendable (and if you’re black x2).

When reflecting, it’s important not to approach from a shameful perspective. What’s done is done. If anything, cringing and crying at decisions, actions, and outcomes show a sign of growth.

In preparation for 2021, it’s probably best to leave everything you think you know about how to live the right way behind. None of that shit is applicable now. All you can do is commit to self-awareness, self-reliance, and self-control. Assert yourself at all times, regardless of the pushback you may face. When you want better for yourself, you just have to start moving like it and never look back. The quickest and easiest way to become a fucking loser is to not live by your own rules.

Yeah, this shit sucks, but we haven’t found anything better yet so I personally am gonna ride this hoe 'til the wheels fall off. And we can’t forget that dark ages are historically followed by reawakenings and renaissances. So wake your ass up and get ready. The world hasn’t ended yet.
